Sonoma Valley Wine Appellations
Sonoma Valley wine region is one of the top American wine region. Sonoma Valley is
home to almost 2,000 wineries.
Sonoma Valley is located north of San Francisco, about one hour north of
San Francisco airport, or Oakland airport.
Sonoma Valley has the following wine appellations:
- Alexander Valley AVA. Along the Russian River, extends north of Healdsburg.
Leading varietals planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel.
- Bennett Valley AVA. South of Santa Rosa, surrounded by Sonoma Mountains.
- Chalk Hill AVA. Along the foothills by the southern end of Alexander Valley, near the town of Windsor.
Leading varietals planted are Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
- Dry Creek Valley AVA. Around the Dry Creek in the Russian River Valley.
Leading varietals planted are Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel.
- Green Valley of Russian River Valley AVA. One of the cooler appellations located
at southwestern corner of the Russian River next to Pacific Ocean.
- Knights Valley AVA. North of Napa Valley and south of Alexander Valley AVA. Known for
Cabernet Sauvignon.
- Los Carneros AVA. North of San Pablo Bay along the Mayacamas Mountains.
Leading varietals planted are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, also
Champagne houses such as Moët et Chandon.
- Northern Sonoma AVA. Covers most of Sonoma County except Sonoma Valley.
- Rockpile AVA. Past Healdsburg, northwest from the Dry Creek Valley AVA. Known for
Zinfandels.
- Russian River Valley AVA. By the Russian River next to Santa Rosa, going towards the coast.
Close to 100 wineries, 15,000 acres (61 km2) of wine grapes planted. Known for
cooler climate varietals such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
- Sonoma Coast AVA. From San Pablo Bay to the border of Mendocino County along
Pacific Ocean coastline.
- Sonoma Valley AVA. Sonoma Valley east of the Sonoma Mountains.
- Sonoma Mountain AVA. West of Sonoma Valley, Sonoma Mountains area including
the town of Glen Ellen.
Leading varietals planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc,
Semillon, and Zinfandel.
